President Proposes Renaming the TRNC
Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has reiterated his proposal to rename the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), suggesting the removal of the term "Northern" to reflect a more unified national identity.
In a recent discussion with writer Hilmi Daşdemir, Tatar expressed his desire to change the country's name to the "Turkish Republic of Cyprus," emphasizing that such a change would require constitutional amendments.
"I would like the name to be changed to 'Turkish Republic of Cyprus,' but the Constitution does not allow it," Tatar stated.
He further noted that if a two-state solution were agreed upon for Cyprus, the distinction between north and south would become unnecessary.
"If there were a federation, there would be a northern and a southern state. Now, such a situation does not exist," he added.
This is not the first time Tatar has proposed such a change; a similar suggestion was made in 2023. However, officials then clarified that, despite the president's wishes, no preparations were underway to alter the country's name, as the Constitution prohibits such a change.
