The President of Southern Cyprus will present his ideas on resolving the Cyprus issue to the UN
President of Southern Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, stated that he has prepared concrete ideas to advance the resolution of the Cyprus issue and intends to discuss them with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin. According to the newspaper Fileleftheros, the meeting is scheduled ahead of the UN General Assembly session: Holguin is expected to visit the island, meeting Christodoulides on September 12 and the President of Northern Cyprus, Ersin Tatar, on September 15.
Christodoulides also addressed the case of five Greek Cypriots detained in Northern Cyprus and said he had undertaken diplomatic steps towards the United States, including contacts through American senators. He stated that he considers Turkey responsible for the detentions and linked the upcoming visits, including that of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, with efforts to resolve this incident.
The official spokesperson of the Greek Cypriot government, Yiannis Andoniou, noted that Christodoulides will participate in a trilateral summit in New York with the aim of facilitating Holguin’s work. For residents of Northern Cyprus, this could mean increased international attention on bilateral contacts and the case of the detainees; any further diplomatic steps could affect the schedule of negotiations and intercommunal relations. As events unfold, it is advisable to follow official statements from the UN and local authorities.
