Disputes over criminal justice reform in occupied territories intensify
The discussion on the bill for changes in criminal procedure in the TRNC continues to provoke public and institutional disputes. Former Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akıncı stated that the proposed norms could restrict public scrutiny in cases of significant interest. He emphasized the need for a thorough review of the initiative, considering its potential impact on press freedom and the accountability of state institutions.
According to Akıncı, the reaction to the bill is not limited to the journalistic community and extends to a wider range of social and professional organizations. Previously, unions and media representatives had expressed concern that certain provisions contradict the practice of the European Court of Human Rights. In particular, norms concerning the presumption of innocence and court case reporting have been criticized, which, in the view of opponents, could hinder public oversight of cases involving public figures.
