Drunk Couple Who Assaulted Police Officers in Girne Released on Bail
A drunken couple in Girne who physically and verbally assaulted police officers has been released on bail following a court appearance.
The husband and wife are facing charges of public intoxication, disturbing the peace, insulting police officers, and assault. During the altercation, one officer sustained a broken finger, while another’s phone was damaged.
The incident took place outside a café named Dallas on Temmuz Kordonboyu Street during celebrations for Atatürk Memorial Day.
According to reports, the couple—an engineer and a schoolteacher—were heavily intoxicated, shouting loudly and causing a disturbance in a public area. When police officers approached them to ask that they pay their bill and calm down, the pair responded with insults. The man then physically attacked the officers, striking them several times and using profane language.
The police restrained the couple using reasonable force and placed them under arrest. However, even after being put into the police vehicle, the suspects continued their aggressive behavior—damaging a mobile phone and tearing the tie of one of the officers.
In court, the judge ordered a travel ban for both suspects, required them to report to the police once a week, and mandated that each secure a guarantor willing to sign a surety bond.
