In Northern Cyprus, prices for basic foodstuffs and seasonal fruits continue to rise, causing growing dissatisfaction among residents. According to Diyalog Gazetesi, over the past week the cost of vegetables and fruits in markets has increased significantly, and many buyers admit they cannot afford their usual products.

In the markets of Kyrenia, Famagusta, and Nicosia, prices for basic products have reached record levels. A kilogram of grapes is sold on average for 150 Turkish lira, figs and plums up to 250 lira, and vegetables such as tomatoes and potatoes have doubled in price compared to last month. Buyers say that even a small shopping basket now costs as much as what previously covered a week’s groceries.

Traders explain the price increases with higher costs for fuel, electricity, packaging, and transportation, as well as the decline of the Turkish lira, making imported goods and materials significantly more expensive. Many sellers note they have to raise prices to cover costs and avoid working at a loss.

A similar situation is observed in the southern part of the island. According to SigmaLive, despite a slight decrease in overall inflation, certain product categories continue to rise: coffee prices increased by 17.9%, chocolate and cocoa by 15.7%, and beef and veal by 15.5%.

Thus, consumers across the island are facing rising food costs, which experts link to global increases in raw materials, transportation services, and energy resources. In Northern Cyprus, the situation is worsened by the weak local currency and the lack of centralized control over retail prices.
