Turkey strengthens its position in the region and conducts large-scale military exercises
Rear Admiral Zeki Aktürk, spokesperson for the Turkish Ministry of National Defense, presented a broad overview of the country's military, regional, and defense activities at a weekly briefing, touching on security issues, exercises, and international politics.
Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean
Following reports of a possible deployment of French troops in southern Cyprus, Turkey stated that it acts within the framework of international law and remains a guarantor of stability on the island. Ankara emphasized that such steps could upset the fragile balance in the region and increase tension, especially against the backdrop of existing security agreements for Cyprus.
Separately, it is noted that Turkey views any changes in the military configuration in the Eastern Mediterranean as a risk factor for regional stability.
Military Operations and Borders
Aktürk reported that 6 PKK members surrendered during the week, the destruction of tunnels in Syria continues (785 km in total), and border control is being strengthened. Since the beginning of the year, 2,430 people have been detained while attempting illegal crossings, and more than 25,000 attempts have been prevented.
Also, 388 kg of drugs were seized in the border regions of Van and Hatay.
Large-scale Exercises
The Turkish Armed Forces continue active exercises, including EFES-2026, involving forces from 45 countries. Parallel exercises are taking place in Azerbaijan, Libya, Ivory Coast, Spain, and Norway. Turkey also participates in multinational NATO missions.
Defense Industry
Deliveries of KARAOK missile systems, the GÖKBEY helicopter, and arms exports to Malaysia were reported. Turkey continues to develop its own defense industry and expand export agreements.
Regional and International Agenda
Ankara reaffirmed its support for negotiations on Iran and expressed concern over the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Turkey also condemned Israel's actions against the humanitarian flotilla to Gaza.
Summary
The statement emphasizes that the Turkish Armed Forces are strengthening combat readiness, expanding international cooperation, and maintaining an active role in regional security, including the Eastern Mediterranean and issues related to Cyprus.
