Forest fire broke out in Girne — the mayor asks residents to send machinery and water trucks
In Girne (Chiklos/Onar Village area), on August 21, a forest fire occurred; firefighters and other specialized services arrived at the scene, and Mayor Murat Şenkul appealed to residents via social media to provide water trucks and construction machinery to help extinguish the fire. According to the municipality, work to contain the fire is ongoing.
Director of the Forest Department, Ercan Poyraz, reported that the fire started on the roadside and is spreading toward Güven Park. All available units are engaged on-site; a military helicopter also joined the operations, conducting aerial water drops. Firefighters are working to contain the hotspots and prevent the fire from reaching residential areas.
For residents of the area, this means possible smoke, traffic restrictions, and temporary evacuation or precautionary measures depending on the situation. At the request of the authorities, those who have water trucks or loading/earthmoving equipment can respond through the municipality’s official channels. It is recommended to follow the authorities’ instructions, keep windows and doors closed during heavy smoke, and avoid entering the affected zone. Photos from the scene were provided by Rauf Mehmetçik.
