The official opening of the İMO Memorial Park took place in Lefkoşa. The park was built in the Ortaköy area on Dr. Remzi Gönenç Street as part of a collaboration between the Lefkoşa Turkish Municipality (LTB) and the Chamber of Civil Engineers (İMO).

The park features a memorial dedicated to deceased members of İMO, as well as a separate monument honoring the “Champion Angels” — children who lost their lives as a result of the devastating earthquake on February 6.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mayor Mehmet Harmancı emphasized that the losses suffered have left a deep mark on the hearts of society. According to him, the new park will serve as a symbol of respect for the memory of those who have passed away and, at the same time, as a symbol of hope for the future.

He noted that the project is an example of effective cooperation between local authorities, professional organizations, and civil society, adding: “With this park, Lefkoşa has once again shown that it is a capital of memory and loyalty to its values.”

Harmancı also said that the park holds special personal significance for him, as among the commemorated names is that of his late brother, who died while studying at the faculty of civil engineering.

He also stressed that the monument in the park reminds visitors not only of those who perished, but also of the causes of the destruction, as well as the vital role of engineering solutions in ensuring people’s safety. The memorial section displays samples recovered from the rubble after the earthquake.

It is reported that the park was designed in accordance with the principles of sustainable urban development. It covers an area of approximately 3.5 dönüms and includes around 1,000 trees and plants.

The park includes:

  • 190 meters of pedestrian walkways,
  • an amphitheater with a capacity of 200 people,
  • a parking area for 25 vehicles,
  • the İMO and “Champion Angels” memorials.

The project was implemented in line with environmental standards and is intended for both recreation and public events, becoming a new important space of collective memory in Lefkoşa.
