In Nicosia, Complaints About Pine Processionary Caterpillar Plummet

The Nicosia Municipality (LTB) reported a significant decrease in the number of complaints related to the pine processionary caterpillar—a pest that poses a threat to human and animal health as well as to the ecosystem.
According to the head of the LTB Environmental Health Department, veterinary doctor Erküt D. Özgöray, significant results have been achieved over the past three years thanks to systematic biological control. While 389 complaints were registered two years ago, in 2025 the number dropped to 72, and as of February 10, 2026, it stood at just 9.
In 2025, 1,400 pine trees underwent biological treatment, and the same number of trees had been treated by February 10 of the current year.
The municipality emphasized that the control measures are conducted exclusively by biological methods, safe for the environment and compliant with international standards. Residents are asked to report any sightings of the pest during working hours to the LTB Environmental Health Department, and outside working hours to the hotline Alo 185.
