Ornithologists have counted 17 nests of the rare Bonelli's Eagle (Tavşancıl Kartallar) in Northern Cyprus. The presence of this species on the island was first recorded 14 years ago.

Damla Beton, president of the Bird and Nature Protection Association (KUŞKOR), emphasized the importance of this species for the island’s ecosystem and suggested making it the symbol of the Beşparmak Mountains.

During the "Important Ornithological Areas" project, which was conducted across the island with EU support in 2010, the presence of three Bonelli's Eagles was captured in photos taken by ornithologists working on the project.

Since then, the birds of prey have been closely monitored. After confirming that the species could reproduce, their nests were identified.

At present, 17 nests have been discovered in Northern Cyprus, though wildlife experts believe there may be an additional 4-5 nests that have not yet been located.

In an interview with the Turkish Cyprus News Agency (TAK), Damla Beton expressed her delight at the increasing population of this species, which has been under observation for 14 years.

The ecologist also reminded that the extinction of the Imperial Eagle, one of the island’s two eagle species in the 1960s, led to the disappearance of other significant birds and large predators, underscoring the importance of preserving this species for the island’s ecosystem.

"Eagles are at the top of the food chain, playing a crucial role. They need to remain balanced in nature to help maintain the populations of other species and preserve biodiversity," Beton stressed.

Damla Beton added that KUŞKOR is working tirelessly to protect nature and wildlife, continuously studying wetlands, identifying migration routes, and safeguarding the island's gull species.

Additionally, the association organizes birdwatching tours on the first Saturday of each month. Information and registration for these tours, which are open to everyone, can be found through KUŞKOR's social media accounts.
