The defense of Simon Aykut petitioned for a change in his detention conditions due to health problems.
During the ongoing trial of Simon Aykut at the Nicosia High Criminal Court, the defense petitioned for a change in the conditions of his detention, citing his health condition that requires urgent and specialized medical examination.
Defense lawyer Christos Triantafyllidis stated that his client suspects he may have prostate cancer and that he needs specialized medical testing to determine his condition and whether treatment or other medical intervention is necessary.
Prosecutor Andreas Aristides did not object to granting the petition in order to accurately assess Aykut’s health condition.
After a brief consultation between both sides, Chief Criminal Court Judge Christiana Parpotta decided that the request regarding Simon Aykut’s detention conditions would be discussed on July 24 at 9:15 AM.
Simon Aykut will remain in custody until that date. It was stated that it was not possible to hear new witnesses outside the conditions of detention during yesterday’s part of the trial.
According to the report, Andreas Aristides, representing the prosecution, said that the next witness, also a Land Registry officer, would not be able to attend and would testify after another Land Registry officer finishes testifying.
Defense lawyer Marias Neophytou confirmed that he had been informed in advance about the inability to question new witnesses and did not object to the adjournment of the hearing.
The Chief Justice also expressed concern about the progress of the case and emphasized that unfortunately, the trial is being delayed due to the lack of witnesses.
The newspaper "Alithia", covering yesterday’s episode of Aykut’s trial, wrote that the prosecution requested a postponement as it could not present new witnesses.
According to reports, the Chief Judge of the High Criminal Court stated that “many witnesses were summoned in this case, but it is regrettable that the trial has been postponed due to the absence of witnesses.”
The newspaper "Haravgi" wrote that the High Criminal Court ruled that the witness hearing in this case would take place on July 29 at 9:15 AM.
In another report, the newspaper Haravgi also mentioned the case of German real estate agent Eva Isabella Künzel, who appeared in court on charges of alleged “seizure” of former Greek property in the TRNC.
According to the report, graphologist Marios Markides stated that the handwriting samples available to him did not allow a definitive conclusion in the case of Eva Isabella Künzel.
The prosecution argued that the samples were incomplete and the methodology inadequate, as they did not reflect the variety in the defendant’s handwriting.
Markides stated that the comparison was made overall rather than word by word.
The next hearing is scheduled for July 16.
