Residents of TRNC Warned About High Ozone Levels
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is experiencing a significant increase in atmospheric ozone levels, according to the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Meteorological Engineers (KTMMOB).
Professor Mustafa Altunç noted that the Department of Meteorology of the TRNC regularly issues warnings about dust pollution. However, during the summer, when temperatures soar, dust accumulation can go unnoticed. Although there have been no recent dust warnings, there has been a rise in respiratory complaints in the country.
Research indicates that the increase in respiratory issues is due to high ozone levels, rather than dust.
“Ozone is a natural component of the atmosphere; it is colorless, heavier than air, and has a strong odor. However, elevated ozone levels can pose health risks by reducing the amount of oxygen we breathe. As an oxidizing agent, ozone can damage human health if inhaled, potentially leading to symptoms ranging from fatigue to severe health problems,” said a representative from KTMMOB.
The expert explained that ozone levels are elevated by emissions from pollution sources such as vehicles, industrial facilities, and power plants. Additionally, ozone formation is facilitated by electrical discharges in the atmosphere during thunderstorms.
The highest ozone levels are typically recorded in Northern Cyprus between 11:00 and 16:00, especially on days with high temperatures.
“All our citizens, not just those with existing respiratory issues, should exercise caution during these hours,” Professor Mustafa Altunç advised.
It is also worth noting that the last warning about dust in the atmosphere in Northern Cyprus was issued a month ago, at the beginning of July.
