Residents of Lefke Demand the Opening of a Police Department and a Court Branch
The non-governmental organizations' platform in Lefke has requested the establishment of a regional Police Department and District Court. In their written statement, they reminded that Lefke became a separate district back in 2016.
In their statement, the residents of the area demanded the restoration of the Police Department, which was relocated from Lefke to Güzelyurt in 1977.
"When we visited the current Police Commissioner, Kasım Kuni, in his office on March 27, 2023, he informed us that his efforts to establish the Lefke Police Department are ongoing. It has been 9 months since then, and we haven't seen any steps taken to establish the Lefke Police Department," the statement says.
It is also noted that today Lefke is a district with a population of around 30,000 people, including Eastern Mediterranean University students and foreigners residing here permanently.
The statement also emphasizes that in recent days, there has been an increase in cases of violence against women, stabbings, thefts, and damage to public property in the region.
"The Lefke Police Department must be established immediately before more serious crimes occur in our area," believe the authors of the appeal.
Due to the rising crime rate, Lefke residents also draw attention to the importance of promptly holding court sessions in the city center.
"Holding accountable those who commit crimes where the crime occurred creates a significant deterrent effect, and it is a serious deterrent in preventing crime," the appeal states.
