Can You Extend a Tourist Visa at a Pedestrian Checkpoint?

Updated: 1 month ago
Want to add your FAQ?

When you enter Northern Cyprus, border control usually stamps your passport with a permit that allows you to stay for a specific period.

How Long Is the Entry Stamp Valid?

In most cases, visitors receive a 30-day entry stamp. However, there have been more frequent reports lately of 60-day stamps being issued.

In theory, a 90-day stay is possible, as this is the maximum period allowed for tourism within six months. However, this is extremely rare and usually applies only to property owners in Northern Cyprus.

That being said, some travelers have reported receiving only 15 days, even if they own property and have a title deed (koçan).

Extending Your Stay Through a Border Crossing

Attempting a visa run at a pedestrian checkpoint in Northern Cyprus is hit or miss—and more often than not, it doesn’t work. Many travelers who cross the buffer zone for a quick trip report that upon re-entering, they receive only a minimal extension—sometimes as little as five days or even just one day.

Some visitors claim that holding a multiple-entry Schengen visa and spending a few days in the Republic of Cyprus might increase the chances of getting a longer extension.

However, if you have a Republic of Cyprus visa (not Schengen) and you entered via Ercan Airport, you won’t be allowed to cross into the south.

While a few lucky travelers have had success, border officials generally do not grant visa extensions at pedestrian checkpoints.

Extending Your Stay Through the Ministry of Interior

If you need to extend your tourist visa, you must apply at the central police station in Lefkoşa (Nicosia). You can find the location [on the map here].

Visa extension rules are outlined in this article, and in most cases, extensions are only granted to property owners or those whose immediate relatives own property.

However, as of early 2025, there have been reports that some tourists without property have managed to get an extension.
