Description of the Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is a sheltered bay surrounded by cliffs, located in the Akamas National Park, near the city of Paphos. It is one of the most beautiful swimming spots in Cyprus, known for its incredibly clear and blue waters.

You can admire the lagoon and photograph it from different angles: from the sea (by boat), from the top of the cliffs, or from the shore.

Visiting Tips for the Blue Lagoon

There are two places named “Blue Lagoon” in Cyprus: one on the west side of the island (Akamas) and another on the east (near Ayia Napa). The Blue Lagoon of Ayia Napa is a tourist beach with infrastructure, bars, and music. In contrast, the Akamas Blue Lagoon is a protected area where you can enjoy untouched nature, swim, dive, snorkel, and relax in peace.

It is recommended to arrive early, especially during the high season, as this place attracts thousands of tourists throughout the day.

Interesting Places Near the Blue Lagoon

On the Akamas Peninsula there are other natural gems worth visiting. Here are some of them.

Aphrodite’s Baths

A natural cave with a spring located in the northeast of Akamas. According to mythology, the goddess Aphrodite bathed here and met young Adonis. The water is believed to have rejuvenating properties. Although bathing is prohibited, you can wash your face. Nearby is the Source of Love. Distance to the Blue Lagoon: 4.6 km.

Aphrodite’s Trail

A 7.5 km long trail which, according to legend, was created when Aphrodite walked through this area and nature parted before her. It was here that she met Adonis. Along the trail, there are benches with romantic sea views, perfect for couples.

Lara Beach

A protected beach in the southern part of Akamas, famous for its sea turtles. Nearby is a breeding center where you can learn more about them. The beach is quiet, without infrastructure, and umbrellas are prohibited. The water is clean, the seabed shallow, making it ideal for swimming.

Avakas Gorge

Located 5-6 km from Lara Beach, this 3 km long gorge is perfect for those who love active hiking. The canyon walls reach up to 30 meters high. It is recommended to wear suitable footwear and not to bring small children. The route is challenging, but the views are impressive.

How to Get to the Blue Lagoon

You can get to the lagoon independently, with an organized tour, or even by renting a boat.

The easiest and most convenient (although less economical) way is to book a tour with transfer. Most tours in the Akamas region include a stop at the Blue Lagoon. You can also reach the lagoon on your own by car or public transport.

By Car to the Blue Lagoon

You cannot drive all the way to the lagoon itself, but you can park at a designated parking area and continue on foot or use local transfers by off-road vehicles. The drive from Paphos takes about 30 minutes.

Car Rentals in Cyprus:

By Public Transport to the Blue Lagoon

From Paphos, take a bus to Polis, then bus No. 622 to Aphrodite's Baths. From there, you need to walk to the lagoon.

Boat Tours to the Blue Lagoon

You can also get to Latchi harbor in Polis and take a tourist boat there — there are plenty of options, and you can either book such a tour online in advance or buy it on site.

Boat Rental to the Blue Lagoon

To rent a boat, you only need to be over 21 and have a driver’s license from your country. There are many boats with various engine powers to choose from, accommodating 6 to 8 people.

Before heading out to sea, you will be given a life jacket and briefed on safety procedures, then a staff member will take you to the boat and teach you how to operate it.
