66-year-old Cypriot lost €30,000 after fake “GESY” SMS

A 66-year-old resident of Cyprus fell victim to a major phishing scam: fraudsters sent him an SMS disguised as a notification from GESY. The message asked him to “pay a small fee” and provided a login link. The man entered his bank card details — after which €30,000 was withdrawn from his account.
A complaint was filed with the police on November 25. The victim stated that the message looked completely official. Only after noticing the large withdrawal did he realize he had fallen for a scam.
Police warn: GESY never sends payment links via SMS and never asks for bank details to be entered on third-party websites. Residents are urged to be cautious and to report any suspicious transactions immediately.
