The Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights has supported an initiative to transfer the coordination of the fight against human trafficking from the Deputy Ministry of Migration to the Ministry of Justice and Public Order.

Committee Chair Irini Charalambidou stated that all involved bodies—the executive branch, the Legal Service, and NGOs—have expressed agreement with this step. At the initiative of MP Rita Superman, a bill has been prepared to facilitate the transfer of powers. The document is scheduled for a parliamentary vote this coming Thursday.

Deputy Minister of Migration Nikos Ioannidis noted that human trafficking is primarily an issue of organized crime; therefore, it is logical to transfer coordination to the Ministry of Justice. He emphasized the importance of inter-agency cooperation.

During the discussion, questions were raised regarding adequate staffing for the ministry, the appointment of a central coordinator, and strengthening the role of the police. Law enforcement representatives reported that protocols for identifying victims are in place, and front-line officers undergo specialized training.

MPs stressed that human trafficking is not a migration problem but a serious felony and a gross violation of human rights. It is expected that the transfer of powers will strengthen service coordination, increase investigation efficiency, and ensure better protection for victims.
