Cypriot Kindergartens Now Required to Notify Parents About Children's Absences
Starting now, it will be mandatory for kindergartens in Cyprus to inform parents if their children are absent from classes. This move is aimed at strengthening the safety protocols for minors.
The new policy, which obligates kindergartens to contact parents or guardians the same day a child is absent (unless prior notice was given), was initiated by the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare after consultations with the Cyprus Association of Private Preschool Education (CIPEK).
The decision came in the wake of a tragic incident on March 14, 2025, when a baby tragically lost their life in Nicosia.
Additionally, the Deputy Minister has urged CIPEK members to implement the measure immediately, even before the completion of a decree that would amend the relevant legislation.
At this time, the practice remains at the discretion of individual kindergarten management.
“We believe that mandatory communication will ensure faster notification and more prompt responses during emergencies, ultimately enhancing the safety of children,” said the initiative's authors.
