Experts: people in Cyprus live longer than the EU average

In the new Cyprus Health Profile for 2025, it is noted that life expectancy on the island is high — above the EU average. However, experts emphasize that a significant portion of health problems is still linked not to “inevitable” causes, but to preventable factors such as smoking, diet, alcohol consumption, and lack of physical activity.
The report indicates that the main causes of mortality continue to be cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Special attention is drawn to the harm caused by tobacco: smoking remains one of the most significant risk factors for the population.
A separate section addresses the healthcare system after the implementation of GESY: access to medical care has expanded and financial burden on individuals has decreased, but challenges include staff shortages, particularly among nurses, which affect system resilience and quality of services.
