Due to warm weather in Cyprus, snakes have become more active ahead of time
Due to the heat in early April, snakes in Cyprus have become active earlier than usual. A herpetologist has given advice on how to dress properly to avoid snake bites and what to do if bitten.
According to herpetologist Yannis Angelis, this year, due to unexpectedly high temperatures, reptiles have woken up from hibernation earlier than usual. Spraying territories against snakes has already begun; however, due to unstable weather and high humidity, this measure may not be entirely effective.
The herpetologist also reassured that the chemicals used for spraying are not toxic and do not affect domestic animals.
At the same time, he explained that active construction has led to a reduction in biodiversity, and the available space for reptiles has decreased. As a result, snakes whose burrows have been damaged may move in search of a safe place.
The herpetologist urged people walking in areas with dense vegetation to wear long pants and high boots, as protective clothing can help avoid potential snake bites.
The specialist added that the only snake species on Cyprus that poses a danger to humans is the viper. When bitten, it leaves one or two puncture wounds on the body, whereas other snakes leave marks on both the upper and lower jaws.
In case of a viper bite, immediate medical attention should be sought at the nearest general hospital without taking any other action.
