Cyprus is not currently experiencing a fuel shortage, but authorities are stepping up preparations in case the situation on international markets worsens. This was stated by Minister of Transport Alexis Vafeades.

Speaking at a meeting of the Executive Committee of the European Transport Federation in Nicosia, the Minister emphasized that the country is closely monitoring developments, especially against the backdrop of instability in the Middle East. According to him, the government is already conducting strategic preparations and collecting data to respond in a timely manner to possible disruptions.

"We must be aware of what is happening and coordinate actions with other EU countries and the European Commission to take measures quickly if necessary," Vafeades noted.

The Minister also pointed to Cyprus's vulnerability as an island nation. Unlike Central European countries, the Republic has no land links and is entirely dependent on sea and air supplies. This makes supply chains more sensitive to external crises.

According to Vafeades, the current geopolitical situation is already exerting some pressure on fuel supplies. In this regard, the authorities conduct daily market monitoring and actively participate in coordination at the EU level. In particular, the issue was discussed at a recent informal meeting of EU ministers, where possible response measures were considered.

Despite remaining stability, the government of Cyprus is preparing for various scenarios, aiming to minimize risks to the economy and ensure an uninterrupted supply of energy resources to the country.
