Cyprus Named the Best EU Destination for Baby Boomers
TUI, one of the world’s leading travel operators, has revealed its list of the top seven European destinations for baby boomers — travelers aged 65 and over. And topping the list is none other than Larnaca, Cyprus. The selection also includes two Greek islands, three Spanish hotspots, and one Portuguese destination.
The list was compiled by TUI Musement, based on reviews and bookings made by senior travelers. The aim was to highlight destinations that best align with the travel preferences of this generation.
Over the past decade, the proportion of people aged 65 and older in the European Union has grown by nearly 3%, now making up over 21% of the total population. This demographic shift is shaping new tourism trends. With more free time, financial security, and a strong desire to see the world, baby boomers are traveling more frequently — especially during off-peak seasons — helping to reduce the impact of tourism seasonality, according to TUI.
Here are TUI’s 7 best European destinations for baby boomers:
-
Larnaca, Cyprus
With an average rating of 8.76, this charming coastal city tops the list. Seniors love its rich cultural heritage, lively Finikoudes promenade, and relaxed Mediterranean vibe. Excursions to the Troodos Mountains and visits to the traditional villages of Lefkara and Fikardou are especially popular. -
Skiathos, Greece
While known for its buzzing nightlife, Skiathos also appeals to older travelers. Island-hopping cruises are a big draw, especially stops at Skopelos — the picturesque island where Mamma Mia! was filmed. -
Madeira, Portugal
This island is a dream for nature lovers and peace seekers. With a mild climate, dramatic scenery, and a tranquil atmosphere, Madeira is perfect for year-round visits. Highlights include Cabo Girão, Pico do Arieiro, Monte Palace tropical gardens, and walks along the island’s iconic levadas (irrigation channels). -
Kefalonia, Greece
This Ionian island offers a mix of stunning landscapes and mythological charm. Seniors enjoy trips to Melissani Cave, the famous Myrtos Beach, and the scenic harbor town of Fiskardo. A visit to neighboring Ithaca, legendary home of Odysseus, is a must for mythology fans. -
Sorrento, Italy
Perched above the Bay of Naples, Sorrento is a classic favorite among older travelers. Its charming historic center and ideal location make it a great base for exploring the Amalfi Coast, the island of Capri, and the ancient ruins of Pompeii and Herculaneum. -
La Palma, Spain
Known as “La Isla Bonita” (The Beautiful Island), La Palma offers a slower pace of life and pleasant weather all year round. Stargazing from Roque de los Muchachos, the island’s highest point, is a major attraction. Visitors also enjoy the Caldera de Taburiente National Park and the quaint village of San Andrés. -
Menorca, Spain
The quietest of the Balearic Islands, Menorca is perfect for travelers seeking relaxation, culture, and scenic beauty. Seniors can stroll through the charming towns of Mahón and Ciutadella, take in panoramic views from Monte Toro, and explore ancient Talayotic monuments. Coastal cruises are also a popular way to discover the island.
