Cyprus will join Earth Hour
Cyprus will join Earth Hour. On March 23, from 8:30 to 9:30 pm, the lights of buildings in the country's cities will be turned off for one hour.
The municipalities of Nicosia, Limassol, and Larnaca, as well as the councils of the rural communities of Athienou and Ormidia, will join the initiative. Traditionally, the presidential administration, police, fire department, and municipalities of Cyprus participate in the event by turning off the external lighting of their buildings.
In Nicosia, activities dedicated to Earth Hour will start at 8:00 pm in Faneromeni Square in the Old Town. Guests will enjoy a musical program and stargazing with telescopes. Admission is free.
At the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, the main lighting will be turned off for an hour.
In Limassol, at the same time, the lighting of the water tower, one of the city's symbols, will be turned off. Lights will also be dimmed at the Cyprus University library, which houses about a million printed publications.
Earth Hour is an annual international event organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) on the last or penultimate Saturday of March. This year it will take place on March 23.
As part of the initiative, participants are encouraged to turn off the lights for one hour to raise awareness about climate change, light pollution, and other environmental issues.
This event was first organized by WWF in Australia in 2007. In 2009, Earth Hour became the largest global grassroots movement in history. Over 2 billion people participate in it annually.
