Cyprus reservoirs filling up: storage levels reach nearly 40%
Cyprus's reservoir occupancy has reached 39.6%, significantly higher than last year's figures, reported senior water development engineer Marios Hadjicostas. According to him, the current water volume stands at 115.2 million cubic meters, whereas a year ago on the same date, this figure was only 66.7 million cubic meters (23%).
Several small reservoirs are already overflowing, while the large reservoirs of the Southern Conveyor are 35.5% full — about 67 million cubic meters of water. In the Paphos region, the situation is even more favorable: the occupancy level reaches 43.5%, or 31.2 million cubic meters.
Hadjicostas noted that for this time of year, water inflow figures are considered good. He emphasized that a further gradual increase in reserves is expected in the coming week, although no sharp rise is forecasted.
"This is not the period when inflow is measured in millions of cubic meters in a short time, however, the current dynamics remain satisfactory," he added.
Experts view the current situation as a positive signal against the backdrop of last year's drought, but emphasize the need to continue rational water management, especially considering climate risks.
