Cyprus strengthens defense: Modernization of key bases to begin in 2027

The Republic of Cyprus is preparing for a large-scale modernization of two strategically important military facilities — the Andreas Papandreou Airbase in Paphos and the Evangelos Florakis Naval Base in Mari. Works are scheduled to begin in the spring of 2027.
The projects are being implemented with international support: the airbase modernization will be conducted in cooperation with the USA, while the naval base upgrade will involve French specialists. Authorities also note high interest from private companies in participating in the projects.
At the Paphos airbase, an expansion of the runway is planned, allowing it to accommodate larger aircraft, including transport planes. Modern communication systems and fuel infrastructure modernization with a possible capacity increase are also planned. Upon completion, around 2030, the base could serve as a key hub for humanitarian missions and ally evacuation operations.
Significant changes are also expected at the naval base in Mari. The project includes deepening the harbor to accommodate frigates and submarines, which will require substantial engineering works. Currently, the port depth is limited and suitable only for small vessels. Plans also include expanding the marina, building a helipad, and updating the entire infrastructure, including administrative facilities and coast guard sites.
Special attention will be paid to security: both bases will be equipped with modern protection systems, including anti-drone measures, which have become a major threat to military infrastructure in recent years.
The modernization is expected to significantly enhance Cyprus's defense capabilities, increase its regional role, and strengthen cooperation with international partners.
