The Cyprus government has reaffirmed its intention to proceed with the long-awaited Larnaca port and marina development project, despite disagreements in public discourse. This was stated by the Minister of Transport and Public Works, Alexis Vafeades.

Speaking in Nicosia, the minister emphasized that the course remains unchanged and all previously agreed plans will be implemented. He also refuted claims regarding the possible creation of an industrial port, noting that such ideas were never discussed at an official level.

According to Vafeades, during a meeting on April 16 with representatives of the municipality and the Larnaca business community, a common understanding was reached regarding future steps, timelines, and the preparation of necessary studies. Initially, the parties agreed not to bring the project into the election agenda, though this position subsequently changed.

The minister acknowledged that the project has been in limbo for about two decades, causing frustration among residents. Consequently, the government intends to speed up the process, starting with the implementation of the marina-related phase, which is not a subject of dispute.

In parallel, expert opinions are expected on the use of the port's land territories. These should determine the optimal development model without compromising its key function as strategically important infrastructure.

Vafeades noted that data analysis and consultations with local authorities will take up to two weeks, after which the preparation of a feasibility study will begin.

Despite controversies and criticism, authorities declare readiness for dialogue with the public but stress: the project will move forward. For Larnaca, this represents a real chance to emerge from years of stagnation and gain modern coastal infrastructure capable of stimulating investment and regional development.
