Dangerous product on shelves: frozen cuttlefish urgently withdrawn from Cyprus market

Cyprus health services have announced the urgent withdrawal of two batches of frozen cuttlefish from the market after detecting levels of cadmium—a toxic heavy metal—that exceed permissible limits.
The product in question is whole cleaned frozen cuttlefish under the EMA brand, produced in India. The recall affects batches with numbers 0350626 and 0360626 (900g packs, expiry date September 19, 2027).
According to authorities, the product was discovered during routine inspections. Laboratory analyses showed that the cadmium content exceeds the standards established by European legislation. Consequently, the product has been deemed unsafe for consumption.
The importer has already been ordered to immediately withdraw the item from sale. However, authorities warn that some of the product may have already been purchased by consumers. Citizens are strongly urged not to consume cuttlefish from the specified batches and to return them to the stores.
Cadmium is a hazardous substance that, when accumulated in the body, can negatively affect the kidneys and the skeletal system. In the long term, it is linked to increased health risks.
The incident highlights the importance of regular food quality control in Cyprus. Health services assure that market inspections are ongoing, and consumer safety remains a priority.
