International health authorities continue a large-scale operation to control the situation surrounding a hantavirus outbreak on the cruise ship MV Hondius. The incident has been granted Level 3 emergency status according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) classification, with six confirmed infections and three fatalities already reported.

According to the World Health Organization, international tracking of passengers from 23 countries and their contacts is being coordinated. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control has formed special monitoring groups, noting the rapid development of the situation, though there are no signs of mass infection spread yet.

The cruise ship continues its journey to Tenerife under strict medical supervision, with about 150 people remaining on board. In the US, the repatriation of 17 citizens has already been organized, and monitoring of passengers and their contacts is underway in several countries across Europe, Africa, and North America. British authorities are also investigating a separate suspicious case of infection.

Despite the concerning situation, international bodies emphasize that the overall risk to the general public remains low. For passengers and crew, it is assessed as moderate due to possible virus transmission through close contact. No new mass cases of the disease have been identified at this time.

Will there be measures in Cyprus?

At this moment, no direct measures or special restrictions have been announced in Cyprus. However, given the international nature of the investigation and the involvement of European epidemiological structures, enhanced sanitary monitoring and data exchange via ECDC are possible if passengers or contacts are linked to Cyprus.
