The Cyprus Forestry Department Reminds About the Ban on Illegal Camping and Fires in Forests
The Cyprus Forestry Department issued an official warning regarding illegal camping and lighting fires in state forests. The department reminded that such actions cause serious damage to nature and can lead to large-scale wildfires.
Special attention is drawn to instances of setting up tents and resting in unauthorized areas, including protected zones such as the Akamas forest. These areas have a special status and are important for biodiversity conservation, so any human interference can disrupt the ecosystem.
The department emphasized that lighting fires outside specially designated areas is prohibited by law. The ban applies to all forest areas and zones within a two-kilometer radius from their boundaries. Violation of this rule is considered a criminal offense and carries severe penalties — up to 12 years imprisonment, fines up to 100,000 euros, or both.
Citizens are urged to be especially cautious during the fire-prone period and to immediately report any suspicion of fire by calling 1407 (Forestry Department) or 112 (fire service).
According to ministry representatives, strict measures and controls are necessary to prevent tragic consequences and preserve Cyprus’s natural wealth.
