In Cyprus, the captains of two boats carrying migrants have been arrested

The Famagusta District Court issued a decision to detain two men, aged 21 and 55, for 8 days. They were captains of two boats carrying 36 migrants.

According to reports, the boats with illegal immigrants were spotted the previous evening in the maritime area of Famagusta near Cape Greco.

In total, there were 36 illegal immigrants aboard the two vessels. Investigations are underway against the two arrested captains for nine offenses.

They are accused of prohibited immigration, illegal entry into the Republic of Cyprus, aiding the illegal entry of persons from third countries into the Republic of Cyprus, aiding a person from a third country with the intention and purpose of making a profit, transporting people by water on an unsafe or overloaded vessel, as well as conspiracy to commit a serious crime and offenses under the Law on Speedboats.
