Cyprus plans to introduce punishment for desecration of dead animals
The Parliamentary Committee on the Environment of Cyprus intends to introduce amendments to the legislation providing for criminal liability for cruelty to dead animals. This was announced by the committee chairman, MP from the Ecologists’ Movement, Charalambos Theopemptou.
The impetus was a shocking video showing abuse of a turtle on a beach in the Chloraka area. Committee members noted the existing legal gap and emphasized that in several countries such actions are punishable even by imprisonment.
Lawmakers called for tougher penalties, improved training for local authority staff, and strengthened prevention of animal cruelty. The issue will be considered at upcoming committee meetings.
