In Cyprus, there is a proposal to revoke driving licenses immediately — without a court decision

In Cyprus, an initiative is being discussed that could significantly change the rules for punishing driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The proposal involves introducing a mechanism for the immediate revocation of driving licenses — directly at the site of the violation, without waiting for court proceedings or lengthy procedures.
According to the proposal, the police would be able to temporarily confiscate licenses from drivers whose tests show alcohol levels above the permitted limit or the presence of drugs. Court proceedings could take place later, but the driver would already be prohibited from driving until a final decision is made.
The idea is explained by the increase in serious road accidents and the desire to remove dangerous drivers from the roads more quickly. Similar practices are already used in a number of European countries and are considered an effective preventive measure.
For now, the initiative is at the discussion stage, and the final parameters and possible implementation timelines have not yet been approved.
