Cyprus has seen a sharp rise in reports of bullying and violence in schools. More than 2,000 parents and children have contacted the 1466 helpline, operated by the Hope For Children CRC Policy Center, seeking support.

In 2023, the helpline received 890 calls. By 2024, that number had more than doubled, reaching 2,120. Many of these calls concern bullying, difficulties adjusting to school life, juvenile offenses, and online abuse. A significant number also involve more serious issues, such as domestic violence, sexual abuse, and child neglect. The reports come not only from children, but also from parents and other concerned individuals.

Children’s complaints often reflect challenges related to the growing use of social media and digital technologies. To address this, Hope For Children runs awareness campaigns and workshops for both parents and teachers, promoting safer internet use and digital well-being.

In 2024, around 7,000 students from public and private schools across Cyprus took part in these awareness-raising sessions. The 1466 helpline is available 24/7, offering psychological, social, and legal support to children and adults facing abuse, neglect, or violence.

The importance of helplines like 1466 is also recognized in strategies by the European Union and the Council of Europe, which urge member states to create child-friendly mechanisms for the prompt protection of children’s rights. In Cyprus, the 1466 line also plays a vital role in the foster care system, offering support to foster families—especially during after-hours or crisis situations when public services are unavailable.
