New Cases of Cat Cruelty Reported in Cyprus
The ecological movement "Cyprus Greens – Citizens' Cooperation" has reported new cases of animal cruelty in Larnaca and the Paphos district, accusing the responsible authorities of failing to take such crimes seriously enough.
According to the organization, a cat was shot with an air rifle in a residential area of Larnaca. Environmentalists note that such actions pose a danger not only to animals but also to public safety, as the shooting takes place near homes.
Two more incidents were recorded in the Paphos district. In one case, on February 16, 2026, a cat was found with a bullet in its body and paralyzed limbs. Following a veterinary examination, the animal had to be euthanized.
In the second case, another cat was found with several bullets in its body, which, according to activists, indicates repeated instances of violence against animals.
Representatives of the movement stated that their animal welfare group regularly encounters such complaints, suggesting a systemic problem rather than isolated cases.
Following the environmentalists' report to the police, the complainants must visit the central Paphos police station to continue the investigation. However, the organization emphasized that the initial police response to the incidents was insufficient.
Activists called on the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, use all available evidence, and apply the penalties provided by law.
