“Smart” electricity meters are being installed in Cyprus: where and when power outages may occur
Cyprus is undergoing a large-scale installation of “smart” electricity meters, carried out by the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (ΑΗΚ). The project covers all provinces of the island and is implemented as part of a digital modernization program for the energy grid.
According to an official ΑΗΚ statement, the installation of new meters requires short-term power outages, usually not exceeding 20 minutes. Work is planned in phases and will continue throughout November. At this stage, equipment replacement is being carried out in Aglantzia in Nicosia, Larnakos Boulevard in Larnaca, the northern part of Pentadromos in Limassol, as well as in Paralimni and Kapparis in Famagusta.
The company warns that brief power interruptions may occur during installation, necessary to ensure safety. Residents are informed in advance about the timing of the replacement, and ΑΗΚ apologizes for any inconvenience and urges consumers to approach the process with understanding.
“Smart” meters will allow remote readings, automatically detect faults, and respond quickly to network disruptions. In the future, the new system will allow users to monitor energy consumption in real time and optimize expenses.
