The Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Cyprus has officially approved the National Mental Health Protection Strategy for the period 2025–2028. This document aims to enhance the quality of mental health services and promote the social integration of individuals with mental health conditions.

Health Minister Michalis Hadjipantelas emphasized that the strategy was developed with the support of the World Health Organization (WHO) and following consultations with relevant authorities and organized groups.

Accompanying the strategy is an action plan that outlines specific initiatives, their timelines, financial assessments, and the authorities responsible for implementation. A key component of the strategy is the creation of a National Mental Health Committee, which will provide advisory services and oversee the progress of the strategy's execution.

The strategy outlines six key areas of focus:

  1. Expanding both hospital and outpatient infrastructure for mental health services.
  2. Enhancing the social integration and safeguarding the rights of individuals with mental health disorders.
  3. Reducing stigma and protecting the rights of patients.
  4. Incorporating mental health issues into national political and legal frameworks.
  5. Encouraging research in the field of mental health.
  6. Improving the overall quality of life for citizens through a comprehensive approach to mental health.

This strategy is one of the central initiatives of the government of Nikos Christodoulides, aimed at improving the well-being of all Cypriots.
