Maintenance Work Completed at the Alectora Mosque in Cyprus

The maintenance work at the mosque in the village of Alectora, located in the Limassol district of the Republic of Cyprus, has been completed. Sotiris Ktoris, co-chair of the bicommunal technical committee for cultural heritage, reported the completion of the work.

The restoration began in April and was carried out with technical support from the UN Development Programme and funding from the European Union.

Before the outbreak of intercommunal violence in the 1960s, Alectora (known as Gokaca in Turkish) was predominantly inhabited by Turkish Cypriots.

The first mosque in the village was built in 1849, but by the late 19th century, it had fallen into disrepair.

The current mosque was completed in 1931, and the last renovation was carried out by the Limassol district authorities in 2004.

Notably, restoration work on the mosque in the village of Avdimou, also in Limassol, began in early November.

In October, the restoration of the Church of Saint George in the village of Mormenekse (Limnia) in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was completed.

Soon, conservation efforts will begin for the mosque in the village of Alaminos in the Larnaca district.
