The Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Cyprus has approved a groundbreaking decision allowing women to voluntarily enlist in the National Guard. This marks a historic shift in the country’s military policy, giving women the opportunity to contribute to national security on an equal footing with men.

Minister of Defense Vasilis Palmas stated that the decision reflects the ongoing evolution and modernization of the Armed Forces. He emphasized that it is a crucial step toward engaging all citizens in the defense and security of their homeland.

While the decision still requires approval from the House of Representatives, the first voluntary enlistment of women is expected to take place in October 2025. Authorities are considering two separate recruitment periods: one in early October for recent high school and technical institute graduates, and another in May for older applicants.

To highlight this milestone, 2025 will be designated as the “Year of Women in the National Guard.” The Ministry of Defense plans to introduce various initiatives aimed at encouraging women's participation and recognizing their contributions to the military.

This move is expected to bring significant changes to military service in Cyprus while also promoting gender equality in the defense sector.

President Nikos Christodoulides expressed his strong support for the initiative, calling it a “turning point” for both the National Guard and the country as a whole.

"This decision strengthens the National Guard’s readiness by granting women equal opportunities to serve, reinforcing the idea that national security is a collective responsibility," the president stated.

The initiative is part of a broader government effort to empower women and expand their role in all areas of society. To further support female recruits, the government will introduce special incentives for those who choose to enlist.
