Over 110 kg of Waste Collected from Three Cyprus Beaches
As part of the “Keep Our Sand and Sea Plastic-Free” project, over 110 kg of waste was collected from three beaches in Cyprus.
The cleanup events took place at Ayia Thekla Beach near Ayia Napa, Sodap Beach in Paphos, and Skoutari Beach in Protaras. To encourage participation, beach parties and contests were organized, with winners receiving reusable buckets as prizes.
Panayota Koustofta, the leader of the “Keep Our Sand and Sea Plastic-Free” project, stated that the initiative aims to involve tourists, tourism companies, and local residents in reducing the use of single-use plastics on beaches. The broader goal is to decrease the amount of plastic waste entering the sea.
“Plastic finds its way into the food chain, impacting both marine life and human health. That’s why, this summer, we need to make the changes we want to see. For instance, we can all bring reusable water bottles to the beach. If the beach is plastic-free, we will have access to free, chilled, and filtered water,” Koustofta emphasized.
Filippos Drousiotis, Chairman of the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative (CSTI), highlighted the “importance of collaboration among all stakeholders” in the tourism sector, including beachgoers, “to achieve our goal of having plastic-free beaches and seas.”
