Musk’s Neuralink prepares for mass production of neural implants

The Neuralink implant is being developed primarily as an assistive technology for people with severe impairments—for example, after spinal cord injuries. The article notes that the first patient with such a device has already used it to control a cursor on a laptop, play games, access the internet, and post on social networks.
Neuralink began human trials in 2024 after U.S. regulators had previously raised safety concerns and initially rejected the company’s application in 2022. According to the publication, by September, 12 people worldwide with severe paralysis had received Neuralink implants and are using them to control digital (and some physical) tools “by the power of thought.” It is also reported that in June the company raised $650 million in investment.
