The President of Cyprus will travel to Lebanon to personally halt the flow of migrants
On Monday, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, will fly to Lebanon. In Beirut, the head of state will personally discuss with the country's leadership the complex situation regarding the influx of Syrian refugees into the country.
Accompanying the Cypriot leader on the trip to Lebanon will be the Ministers of Interior and Foreign Affairs, the Chief of the National Guard, and several other government officials.
"On Monday, I will travel to Lebanon. We are facing a crisis, but I want to assure you that we will do everything possible to handle this situation," the president said.
Nikos Christodoulides also added that he has already discussed the upcoming trip with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati.
Over the past five days, 15 boats carrying 786 illegal migrants have arrived in Cyprus from Lebanon. Since the beginning of the year, the number of Syrian refugees who have arrived approaches 2,500.
Due to the sharply increased flow of illegal migrants, the National Security Council of the Republic of Cyprus convened for an emergency meeting.
The President of the country, Nikos Christodoulides, appealed to the head of the European Commission to intervene in the situation.
"On Sunday, I will meet with the President of the European Commission. We are in contact at a technical level," said the President of the Republic.
