EU Special Envoy Preparing for First Meetings in Cyprus
The European Union’s Special Representative for the Cyprus issue, Johannes Hahn, is preparing to hold his first official meetings on the island in the near future, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis has confirmed.
According to Letymbiotis, Hahn has already begun laying the groundwork for his upcoming mission in Cyprus.
Hahn’s appointment was announced in mid-May, initiated by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. His role is to support efforts aimed at resolving the Cyprus problem under the auspices of the United Nations.
In this position, Hahn will report directly to the President of the European Commission and work in close coordination with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Cyprus, María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar. The European Commission emphasized that this appointment reflects the EU’s strong commitment to achieving a comprehensive and lasting solution to the Cyprus issue, in line with UN resolutions and the core values of the European Union.
Hahn is expected to arrive on the island soon, where he will meet with representatives from both communities.
