UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Hold Talks in Cyprus from May 24 to 31
Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Cyprus, will conduct negotiations on the island from May 24 to 31. The Colombian diplomat is scheduled to meet with leaders of both communities, their representatives, and various non-governmental organizations.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric told CNA that during her visit, the envoy also plans to hold meetings with the guarantor countries — Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.
Earlier reports indicated that during her first visit following her reappointment, the envoy would meet separately with the leaders of both communities.
Nikos Christodoulides, head of the Greek Cypriot administration, announced over the weekend that he will receive the UN envoy on Sunday, May 25. He also noted that there are no plans for him to meet Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar before the envoy’s talks.
Meanwhile, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Ersin Tatar said he will meet the UN Secretary-General’s personal representative on Monday, May 26, at 10:30 a.m.
As a reminder, earlier this May, UN Secretary-General António Guterres reappointed Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar as his personal envoy to Cyprus. Her new mandate officially began on May 12, 2025. She now has roughly two months to prepare the next steps toward resolving the Cyprus issue ahead of a five-party meeting scheduled to take place in Geneva at the end of July.
