The Cyprus court has approved the extradition of a Russian to the USA
The Appeals Court of Cyprus has agreed to extradite Russian citizen Arthur Petrov to the USA. He was arrested in 2023 in connection with allegations of illegal export of American microelectronics to Russia.
The decision to permit the extradition of the Russian to the USA became known on April 25. According to TASS, at the moment, Arthur Petrov is awaiting the appeal of the decision in the Supreme Court of Cyprus. Meanwhile, his lawyers are studying the case.
"The decision of the Appeals Court is inexplicable, as the District Court in Larnaca had previously recognized the illegality of the extradition," the accused was quoted as saying.
The Russian citizen in question was arrested in Cyprus on August 26, 2023, at the request of the USA. He is accused of illegally exporting American microelectronics to Russia. The detained Russian had previously expressed concerns about possible pressure from the Washington authorities on Cyprus.
Recall that in January, the Supreme Court of Cyprus in its appellate jurisdiction unanimously rejected the appeal for extradition to Russia of another Russian national who is wanted on suspicion of embezzlement of budget funds and decided to keep him in custody pending extradition to Russia.
As reported by "Izvestia" with reference to the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation, in 2023 foreign states rejected 114 Russian requests to extradite individuals for criminal prosecution.
