Press freedom as a priority: Cyprus authorities affirm support for independent journalism
On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis reaffirmed the state's commitment to the principles of independent journalism and free access to information.
In a written statement, he emphasized that the authorities respect the institutional role of the media and the right of citizens to reliable and pluralistic information. According to him, in the face of rising disinformation and technological changes, the importance of responsible journalism is only increasing.
Letymbiotis noted that democracy is impossible without oversight, criticism, and investigation. “Society needs journalists who can work without fear, pressure, or threats,” he stressed.
According to the spokesman, the Republic of Cyprus, as part of the European Union, strives to maintain an environment where journalism can fulfill its mission. This includes transparency, access to information, protection of media workers, and the strengthening of institutional guarantees for freedom of speech.
Separately, he noted the importance of criticism as an element of the democratic process. Constructive disagreement based on facts contributes to the development of public dialogue and the formation of a more informed society.
At the same time, Letymbiotis emphasized that press freedom is linked to responsibility — for protecting the truth, countering manipulation, and fighting disinformation. In his view, the response to modern challenges should be transparency, accountability, and the maturity of institutions.
In conclusion, the spokesman noted that freedom of the press remains a fundamental pillar of democracy and its protection is not only a duty of the state but also its political and European principle.
