Tornado in Avgorou: damaged houses, destroyed panels, and fully power-out village

The tornado that passed through the village of Avgorou in the Famagusta district on Tuesday afternoon left behind serious destruction and completely cut off electricity in the area. Strong gusty winds tore off roofs, broke trees, and damaged solar panels and water heaters on house roofs. The Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) confirmed that the low-voltage network was affected and repair crews are already working in the damaged area. Signs of the storm’s impact were also recorded in Frenaros, Sotira, and the Kapparis area in Paralimni.
Local residents say the tornado came suddenly and lasted only a few seconds. Paraskevi Tsuka said that she and her daughter hid under a table: “We heard the roar of the wind — and realized it was a tornado.” The woman’s solar panels and air conditioner were completely destroyed. Elena Margari reported that her brother and sister-in-law had to abandon their car when debris started falling on it: “They got out and saw that part of the roof had simply disappeared.” Returning home, the family found severe flooding. “Good thing no one was inside,” she added. Andrula Ioannou said that upon going outside, she immediately saw a cypress tree fallen nearby: “The main thing is that the children were home and safe.”
