An old unexploded rocket found off the Akamas Peninsula
On the seabed off the coast of Akamas in Cyprus, an unexploded military rocket has been discovered. The scene is being patrolled by the marine and port police of Paphos.
The report of the munition discovery was received by law enforcement around 13:45 the day before. The rocket was found by divers approximately 100 meters from the shore at a depth of about four meters.
Early on Thursday, August 15, explosives experts arrived in Akamas. The pyrotechnicians determined that it is a very old oxidized shell about half a meter long, which is in a non-functional condition.
The area has been cordoned off. A coast guard vessel is patrolling the area to prevent civilians from approaching.
A police operation is expected to start on Thursday, during which an explosives expert will dive into the water to retrieve the rocket from the seabed. The Paphos Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is handling the investigation.
