High-Profile Case of Mass Dog Abuse Under Review in Limassol
The Limassol District Court is currently hearing an unprecedented case of animal cruelty involving a 77-year-old woman, who faces 13 charges related to the Animal Protection and Welfare Act. Authorities discovered 11 dogs in her home, living under horrific conditions.
According to the newspaper Phileleftheros, provincial veterinarian Constantinos Oikonomidis was called to testify during the hearings that began recently. He described in detail the appalling living conditions of the affected animals and the various ailments they suffered from.
The case dates back to 2020, when the State Veterinary Services reported the situation to the police. During the first raid at the defendant’s home, three dogs were found. These animals were severely dehydrated, suffered from chronic illnesses, and had ulcers on their legs. Despite immediate treatment provided by the Veterinary Services, one of the dogs unfortunately did not survive.
In early August 2020, police were instructed to conduct a further investigation at the defendant’s property, which was adjacent to where the initial three dogs were found. During this investigation, an additional eight dogs were discovered, also in critical condition and in need of veterinary care.
The defendant’s lawyer requested additional time from the court to review the new evidence presented and to prepare for cross-examination.
