First Festival Celebrating Cyprus' Longest River Begins in Nicosia
The inaugural Pediaios River Sustainable Development Festival has begun in Nicosia, honoring Cyprus' longest river with a celebration that will run from October 29 to November 3.
The festival, organized by the Commissioner for Environmental Protection and the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative, aims to increase public awareness of environmental conservation and cultural heritage. This six-day event is the result of collaboration among 11 government agencies, 14 local authorities, and 28 additional organizations, including NGOs, educational institutions, schools, and private individuals, all working together to create a vibrant and engaging experience.
"Environmental awareness, sustainable development, and environmental protection are at the core of our 85 diverse activities, which include environmental education sessions, entertainment, community events, and informational workshops," say the organizers.
Events will be held at various locations along the river to "prevent overcrowding, reduce environmental impact, and highlight the natural beauty of the riverbed."
Highlights of the festival include art installations in Ayii Omologites, riverbank cleanup events, the premiere of the documentary Stone by Stone on Wednesday at Pantheon, and an official opening ceremony in Lakatamia on Friday.
Over the weekend, 68 additional events will take place at various points along the river, including a beach cleanup at the river's mouth in Famagusta, tree planting, guided tours, workshops, musical performances, hikes, stargazing, and more.
Organizers emphasize that all events are free, although registration is required for some activities.
