Chemical leak at hotel in Protaras

A chemical leak occurred at a hotel in Protaras, prompting an emergency evacuation on Monday afternoon after toxic gas fumes were detected rising from the machine room of the underground pool.
The Famagusta Fire Department reported receiving the first emergency call at 16:05 on June 30. Firefighters arrived at the scene in a specialized chemical response vehicle to address the incident.
Crews discovered a chemical leak and the formation of toxic fumes in the machine room of the hotel’s pool.
As a precaution, the fire service, in cooperation with hotel staff, evacuated the underground area, including the pool zone, to ensure the safety of guests and employees.
Firefighters entered the affected area wearing protective suits and breathing apparatus. Ventilation systems were used to clear the air. Authorities confirmed that the chemicals had entered the pool through a special device designed to safely dissolve such substances.
The private company responsible for pool water maintenance assisted in handling the chemicals.
No injuries were reported. It was confirmed that there was no danger to human life during the incident. The hotel has not issued an official statement on the matter.
